A bibliography on Climate Change and Migration

This report is geared at bringing visibility to and new evidence on the migration-environment nexus. It gives space to young researchers to present a variety of case-studies on migration, environment and climate change. 

The Compendium aims at exploring the multiple ways in which mobility influences vulnerability and resilience at the individual, community and society level, as well as at highlighting how innovative, comprehensive solutions can be used to address the different aspects of this issue.

This Comprehensive Guide for Planning Mass Evacuations in Natural Disasters attempts to bring together emergency planning needs and humanitarian considerations which are complementary in so many ways. 

This study examines the question of durable solutions to displacement in Port-au- Prince, recognizing that the challenges faced in Haiti may be a source of insight for responses to other urban, post-disaster displacement crises. The study draws on the results of focus groups in camps and communities, site visits, and in-depth interviews with government officials, donors, local and international NGO representatives, and the staff of international organizations in Port-au-Prince.

This paper summarizes the finding of a study of greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

This information document updates a study on the economics and cost effectiveness of technical and operational measures to reduce CO2 emissions from ships. The results may be used by ship designers, builders, owners and operators as a tool in their decision-making on whether to employ one or more technologies or operational measures.

This study was commissioned by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to analyse the potential reduction resulting from the mandated energy efficiency regulations on EEDI and SEEMP as finalised at MEPC62 in July 2011 and also to estimate the projected reduction in CO2 emissions from international shipping for every year up to year 2050 resulting from these agreed measures, using a number of scenarios.

This article argues that, as the world’s only really reliable, global, cost-effective and energy-efficient mass transportation method for energy, materials, foods and products, maritime transport is central to sustainable development. And the maritime transportation system itself must, therefore, ensure that its development is also sustainable.

This publication aims to provide an objective synthesis and analysis of the impacts of ocean fertilization on marine biodiversity. Among other findings, this publication demonstrates that there are uncertainties surrounding the viability of large-scale ocean fertilization as a carbon sequestration tool and potential adverse consequences for marine species, habitats and ecosystem function. 

This publication aims to compile and synthesize available scientific information on ocean acidification and its impacts on marine biodiversity and habitats, which is identified as a potentially serious threat to cold-water corals and other marine biodiversity. Findings include that increasing ocean acidification reduces the availability of carbonate minerals in seawater, important building blocks for marine plants and animals, and that by 2100, 70% of cold-water corals, key refuges and feeding grounds for commercial fish species, will be exposed to corrosive waters. 

This publication explores the links between biodiversity, forest ecosystem resilience, and climate change. Its findings are relevant for the future implementation of the CBD, but also the UNFCCC, the Forest Instrument of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), and other international and regional forest-related agreements. It provides a compelling rationale for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in any forest-based climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. 

This document has been produced by a suite of world-renowned experts in the fields of biodiversity and climate change. It helps up to better understand how these two great challenges interact and how we can best work together to achieve our common goals. The scientific information contained in this report clearly demon- strates that the synergies among the three Rio Conventions are no longer an option but an urgent necessity. 

This document has been prepared by the Secretariat of the CBD, with a view to provide technical and scientific information to Parties in the process of designing and implementing REDD-plus in a way that does not run counter to the objectives of the CBD, but supports the implementation of the programme of work on forest biodiversity.

This publication on the occasion of the Rio+20 conference highlights the roles of the Rio conventions’ processes involved in biodiversity, combating desertification/land degradation and climate change as important contributors to the global sustainable development agenda, drawing attention to successes and future opportunities. 

This paper focuses on methodological guidance for activities relating to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+), specifically related to systems for providing information on how safeguards referred to in appendix I to UNFCCC decision 1/CP.16 are addressed and respected. 

This report provides a synthesis and analysis of the impacts of ocean fertilization on marine biodiversity, and considers the possible impacts of geoengineering techniques on biodiversity and associated social, economic and cultural considerations, and on gaps in the regulatory mechanisms for climate-related geoengineering relevant to the CBD. 

This Global Biodiversity Outlook 4 demonstrates that with concerted efforts at all levels, we can achieve the goals and targets of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011–2020. Success will significantly contribute to the broader global priorities of eliminating poverty, improving human health and providing energy, food and clean water for all. 

This report, which presents complex scientific information on ocean acidification in a clear and understandable way, provides an important reference point for scientists, policy-makers and anyone else interested in understanding how ocean acidification affects our oceans and the vital services they provide.
