This is a collection of factsheets highlighting Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture Programme projects. It shows the issues faced by smallholder farmers due to climate change, and the actions IFAD is taking to combat it, and the expected outcomes of these actions. 

This brochure provides a summary of IFAD’s Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture Programme, the world’s largest adaptation platform for smallholder farmers. It provides a new source of co-financing to scale up and integrate climate change adaptation with IFADs regular investments.

This video is a series of recipes from developing countries which bring to you a taste of someone else’s life. It gives you the chance to cook the same meal as the Hong family in the Mekong Delta or Olive Bibutsuwahoze and her family in eastern Rwanda. The Recipes for change takes a traditional recipe and examines how its ingredients are becoming threatened by climate change.

This document presents that smallholders are both dependent on agriculture and contributors to related emissions, but they also hold the key to reducing these emissions if supported through innovative and holistic programming. 

This guidance document presents that climate change disproportionally affects the poorest and most marginalized communities living in vulnerable regions, among them indigenous peoples, whose livelihoods depend on natural resources. While Indigenous peoples are generally depicted as victims of poverty and vulnerability to climate change, the document suggests that it would also be appropriate to emphasize their sensitivity to the environment, adaptive capacity and resilience, as manifested by their ability to modify their behaviour in response to changing climatic conditions.

This guidance document suggests that smallholders are among the best possible clients for climate finance: investing in better access to weather information, disaster preparedness, social learning and technology transfer will help smallholders be better equipped to feed a growing world population. At the same time, they can restore degraded ecosystems and reduce agriculture’s carbon footprint. 

This activity report presents some examples of the IFAD-GEF partnership from around the world by using brief case studies to highlight certain aspects of various projects, which includes over 43 national and regional projects, covering areas of biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation and sustainable forest management.

This policy document sets out renewable energy applications in Arab countries and underscores the need to adapt relevant technologies and develop local industries to manufacture adequate renewable energy equipment. The document stresses the benefits of adaptation and manufacturing in line with local, climate, economic and social conditions.

This activity report provides an overview of capacity-building activities provided to ESCWA member States in the field of climate change negotiations, in preparation for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21). It also presents the ESCWA Guide on Climate Negotiations for Representatives and Negotiators from the Arab Countries as well as the impact of three regional training workshops on capacity development for climate change negotiations, which were conducted by ESCWA in cooperation with the League of Arab States.

This activity report presents the outcomes of the workshop on “Sustainable Energy Access for Rural areas” on 22 September 2016, within the context of the 7th Beirut Energy Forum, held on 21–23 September 2016. The report aims to share lessons learned, shedding the light on examples from the participating countries and experts, and initiating the approach for possible options on the way forward.

This activity report presents the discussions during the Second Energy Forum for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency and the role of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), which was held in Hurghada, Egypt, 18-19 June 2014. The report explores the role that SMEs can play in sustainable energy development in the Arab region as well as the technical, institutional, financial and legislative instruments that can encourage the engagement of SMEs in these fields.

The activity report presents the proceedings of the eleventh session of the Committee on Water Resources of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), which was held in Amman, on 26 and 27 March 2015. The session agenda included priority issues such as climate change, its impacts on water resources in the Arab region and progress achieved in implementing the Regional Initiative for the Assessment of the Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR) as well as building the capacities of member States in climate change negotiations and preparations for COP21.

The agenda also includes progress achieved in implementing the Regional Initiative for Establishing a Regional Mechanism for Improved Monitoring and Reporting on Access to Water Supply and Sanitation Services in the Arab Region (MDG+ Initiative), regional cooperation for shared water resources management, the post-2015 development agenda from the perspective of the Arab region and the water-energy-food nexus in the Arab region. 

This activity report presents the proceedings of the tenth session of the Committee on Energy of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), which was held in Amman on 22 and 23 March 2015. The session agenda contained several priority topics, including sustainable energy in the Arab region, especially energy security and regional integration, technology adaptation policy and potential for local manufacturing of adequate renewable energy equipment and a regional agenda for the implementation of the United Nations Decade on Sustainable Energy for All, as well as natural resources management for sustainable development, including the post-2015 development agenda from the perspective of the Arab region and the energy-water-food nexus in the Arab region.

The guidance document provides a starting point to plan surveys, create a common understanding of terms and concepts, establish a common framework for reviewing and evaluating final energy consumption surveys, and summarize regional experiences. The document serves as a reference on methodologies for data collection regarding energy use by the transport sector, as well as providing models for estimation (supply and use) and case studies from Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia and Canada.

This technical document measures the impact of climate change on freshwater resources through an integrated assessment, in order to identify the related underlying causes of socioeconomic and environmental vulnerability in the Arab region. The document is prepared within the framework of the Regional Initiative for the Assessment of the Impact of Climate Change on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR).
