Climate change is a major concern for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In fact, almost 80% of SMEs currently expect the risks associated with climate change to have a significant impact on their business. But what can they do about this? What measures can SMEs put in place to better adapt to climate change and thrive in a changing environment? As a business-owner, knowing when and how climate change will affect your business is essential to identify climate-smart solutions that will lower the chances that climate change will negatively affect your enterprise. Becoming climate-smart will also provide your business with a number of benefits. In this e-course, we will introduce participants to the different steps of developing a climate adaptation strategy for their business.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

– Provide logical and succinct arguments for the importance of taking actions to deal with climate change,

– Assess the various aspects of climate change at the enterprise level and identify measures and risks impacting on their enterprise,

– Prioritize what measures should be implemented in preparation for putting together a climate change strategy

This report is a contribution from the public health community to support the negotiations

of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It was written at the request of the President of the 23rd Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP23), Prime Minister Bainimarama of Fiji, to the World Health Organization (WHO) to prepare a report on health and climate change, to be delivered at COP24.

An overview of the initiatives and tools with which the national, regional and global public health community is supporting and scaling up actions to implement the Paris Agreement for a healthier, more sustainable society.

Recommendations for UNFCCC negotiators and policy-makers on maximizing the health benefits of tackling climate change and avoiding the worst health impacts of this global challenge.

The report is based on contributions from over 80 health professionals, academic experts, representatives of civil society and international agencies who have worked on climate change and health for over three decades.

This report has been prepared in response to informal requests by SIDS Member States and territories for WHO assistance in confronting the stark and dire situation which climate change has created in their countries and the impact it is having on their peoples. It is also the joint vision of Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, Prime Minister Frank Bainamarama of Fiji and President of the 23rd Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP23), and Ms Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, when they launched the SIDS Initiative at the COP in Bonn in November 2017. 

The World Food Programme (WFP) and Oxfam America (OA)launched the R4 Rural Resilience Initiative (R4) in 2011 to enable vulnerable rural households to increase their food and income security in the face of increasing climate risks. R4 builds on theinitial success of the Horn of Africa Risk Transfer for Adaptation (HARITA) initiative, pioneered in Ethiopia by OA, the Relief Society of Tigray (REST) and Swiss Re.

To support countries in the mitigation and management of climate risks, WFP is implementing innovative programme approaches to reduce losses and damages in the livelihoods of people who are faced with increasing climate extremes. The approach that has the biggest potential of closing the humanitarian funding gap is Forecast-based Financing (FbF).

This policy defines how the organization can contribute to the prevention of climate-induced losses and damages in food systems, and to the reduction of vulnerabilities in food insecure populations.

This study, commissioned by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD), responds to a call by governments in Latin America and the Caribbean in the 2014 Brazil Declaration and Plan of Action to assess and provide guidance on the response in those regions to cross- border displacement in the context of disasters linked to natural hazards and climate change (hereinafter ‘disaster displacement’).2

This document sets out key legal considerations relevant for the protection of people fleeing conflict and famine affected countries, by outlining the applicability of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees1 and its 1967 Protocol2 (1951 Convention) as well as the broader refugee criteria included in the 1969 OAU Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa (1969 OAU Convention).

This Toolbox, developed by Georgetown University, UNHCR, and IOM in close cooperation with the World Bank and UN University, seeks to provide concrete suggestions for States and other actors who are contemplating or planning to relocate people in order to

This overview sets out recommendations, based on the present study, to strengthen implementation of refugee law-based international protection when cross-border movements occur in the context of nexus dynamics. It does so by examining four case studies, which concern:

– Kenya and Ethiopia’s responses, primarily during 2011–2012, to the cross-border movement of Somalis in the context of drought, food insecurity and famine, when conflict and violence also prevailed in southern and central Somalia; and

– Brazil and Mexico’s responses, primarily during 2010–2012, to the cross-border movement of Haitians in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, when insecurity, violence and human rights violations also prevailed in Haiti.

The objectives of this mapping are to:

• Enhance dissemination of the existing tools and guidance;
• Identify key opportunities to further develop tools and guidance, to enhance coherence between tools and guidance and to ensure better implementation of existing tools and guidance;
• Inform the development of recommendations related to tools and guidance by the Task Force on Displacement; and
• Inform the work of the Warsaw International Mechanism on Loss and Damage as it pertains to tools and guidance.

Greening Technical and Vocational Education and Training: a practical guide for institutions is designed to help leaders and practitioners of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in improving their understanding of, and implementing, education for sustainable development (ESD).

It is guided by a whole-institution approach, and uses a step-by-step process that can be applied in an institutional setting. The process consists of four steps: understanding, planning, implementing, and monitoring and assessment. The Guide identifies several key elements to assist TVET leaders and their institutional teams in understanding the steps in greening their institutions and programmes. It explains the need for, and the institutional benefits of, greening. It also addresses key elements for creating the rationale and strategy prior to launching the first step. The core elements of creating an institutional greening plan (IGP), addressing short, medium and long-term goals, are outlined in Step 2. Then Steps 3 and 4 address suggestions for implementing, developing and assessing the e greening process.

The UNICEF Youth website provides several activities, materials, lessons, and resources on climate action for students to discuss the impacts of climate change on the world and the humanitarian effects that it causes. Students will also gain knowledge in their own role to fight for climate justice and the movements that have already taken shape by young people around the globe.

This teaching guide provides key elements on how to integrate the theme forest into the classroom. It helps youth to understand forest as well as effective pedagogical approach for teachering plan. 

This training manual aims at exploring the impacts of climate change on agriculture and food security as well as presenting key concepts on climate-smart agriculture including gender dimensions. 

This activity book for kids explores key concepts of climate change and its relation to food waste, natural resources, fisheries, and food systems. 

This activity book is for young people interested in learning more about healthy diets.

This case study focuses on innovative solutions that the Nepal Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR) Community of Practice (COP) has introduced to increase water security. It also looks at how ancient practices are being reinstated to revive dried-up springs. New uncertainty on the availability of freshwater resources in many parts of the world call for global climate efforts to focus on transformative actions that increase water security, and to reduce the impact on vulnerable communities. The Climate Investment Funds’ (CIF) PPCR is funding many such initiatives.

This case study captures emerging trends in adaptation-directed microfinance in Jamaica. Microfinance is a critical enabler of climate resilience because it provides communities with direct access to the financial resources they require to address their most pressing needs. The findings in this case study have emerged from a variety of country interventions funded by the Climate Investment Funds’ (CIF) Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR).
