This technical document aims to present a background to resource-based conflicts and how they may be influenced by climate change in the Asia Pacific region. In so doing, this paper first examines the relationship between security, natural resources, and climate change. Second, this document looks specifically at this issue in the Asia-Pacific region, presenting case studies from South and West Asia, East Asia, and the Pacific. The paper also presents an appraisal of existing address of this issue and explores options for future action that may underpin peace and security in a climate change context at local and international levels.

This technical document presents the effects of increased temperatures and sea-level rise, together with other climate-linked changes to the Pacific Islands. It examines past responses to climate changes and barriers in driving adaptation to climate change at the community level. It also presents a set of fundamental challenges to livelihoods in the Pacific Islands region posed by future climate change and recommendations to reduce the impacts of such changes.

This fact sheet presents the experience of a woman solar technician in Bangladesh. It highlights that the training of solar technicians provides employment and income opportunities. Simultaneously, it facilitates a low-carbon development path through the promotion of renewable energy. 

This fact sheet briefly presents experiences from an International Labour Organization (ILO)’s green business project aimed at greening the hotel industry in Thailand. The project promoted environmentally-friendly practices, addressing, among others, emissions associated with poor resource management, whilst also advancing the decent work agenda in workplaces.

This fact sheet outlines the work of the Youth Entrepreneurship Facility (YEF), a partnership between the Africa Commission, the Youth Employment Network and the International Labour Organization (ILO), in Kenya. Through training and business plan competition YEF promotes green entrepreneurship among young women and men in the country.

This technical document sets out the different methodologies available to assess the employment potential that green policies can offer and, in so doing, aims to help to focus policy decision-making in order to make it as efficient and productive as possible.

This activity report presents the various initiatives that have been conducted in 2011-2012 within the Maurice Ile Durable (MID) framework. The first part of the report presents the steps that Mauritius has taken toward sustainability through the MID vision. It goes on to highlight the contribution that the International Labour Organization (ILO)’s Green Jobs Agenda can make to this process. Four studies have been conducted in Mauritius in 2011 to explore the opportunities for green jobs in the country. The second part of the report presents the findings and recommendations from these studies. The third part contains the joint Action Plan by the Mauritian partners, developed as a follow up to the findings of the studies. The Plan aims to ensure that employment is part and parcel of the MID strategy. The report concludes with a review of the key recommendations and an outline of the steps necessary to integrate the action plan into the MID process as well as in the employment policies of the country.

This manual aims to be a practical guide with useful information for entrepreneurs, who are willing to start a green business. Firstly, it offers a short explanation of available green technologies and green services that make business sense. Secondly, it outlines the types of skills and expertise needed to start a business in the identified green technologies and services, also identifying the specific professions/occupations required. Finally, it provides an internet link for further practical research and information. Consequently, this guide is divided into sectors in which Green Business can be created, including renewable energy, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, waste management and recycling, construction, nature and eco-tourism, efficiency technologies for energy, material, and water.

This training kit is designed to give teachers confidence, through a series of six-day programmes, to help young people understand the causes and consequences of climate change. It aims to bring climate change education outside the science classroom into all subject areas liable to be affected by climate change. These include ethics, social studies, economics and political science, among many others. The materials are organized into four parts: 1) course framework and overview, 2) teachers’ education course daily materials, 3) regional resource packs, and 4) daily classroom materials for teachers.

This analytical report provides a snapshot of recent scientific literature and new analyses of likely impacts and risks that would be associated with a 4° Celsius warming within this century. It is a rigorous attempt to outline a range of risks, focusing on developing countries and especially the poor. A 4°C world would be one of unprecedented heat waves, severe drought, and major floods in many regions, with serious impacts on ecosystems and associated services. But with action, a 4°C world can be avoided and we can likely hold warming below 2°C.

This analytical report presents global research priorities that were identified through a consultation process with experts and policymakers, and are intended to serve as guidance to researchers, donor groups and other stakeholders. The report consists of 33 topics presented in three sections: 1) Information to Support Policymaker Decisions, 2) Systems and Regions, and 3) Emerging Topics. Each of the 33 topics includes a description of why the research is needed, followed by several paragraphs describing specific activities that respond to that need. A short bulleted list thereafter highlights representative examples of critical activities from the broader set of proposed activities for each research topic.

This technical document aims to support adaptation planning to protect health from the negative effects of climate change in European Member States. It is based on a review of the science, and provides step-by-step guidance on estimating: (a) the costs associated with damage to health due to climate change; (b) the costs for adaptation in various sectors to protect health from such damage; and (c) the efficiency of adaptation measures: the cost of adaptation versus the expected returns, or averted health costs. The tool is expected to be applied in Member States mainly by ministries responsible for climate-change adaptation. It consists of a document describing the methods step-by-step and a manual with an Excel spreadsheet, which is a visual aid for calculating costs.

This activity report provides an overview of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF)’s extensive work supporting the development of national renewable energy regimes based around feed-in tariffs. In these activities UNDP-GEF assists developing countries to assess key barriers and risks to technology diffusion, and then to identify a mix of derisking instruments and incentives to remove these barriers and to drive investment.

This activity report details a project on the recycling of municiapl waste and biogas production conducted in Lalitpur, Nepal by a group called Women Environment Protection Committee (WEPCO). The document reports the strenghts and weaknesses of the project as well as the impact it has had on the community.
