This guidance document showcases how the world’s smallest island nations are now using new climate prediction tools to boost their economies and enhance livelihoods in areas as diverse as renewable energy, agriculture and national economic planning. The case studies reflect on the fact that, despite their remoteness and limited resources, many Small Island Developing States are now leading the world in their application of climate prediction services to strengthen their economies and develop a brighter, more hopeful future for their communities.

Priority Needs for the Operationalization of the Global Framework for Climate Services (2016–2018)

This analytical document highlights the identification of priority needs for operationalization of the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS), based on the foundations and context of the 10-year GFCS Implementation Plan. The Plan identifies three phases implementation: I focused on establishing the Framework’s infrastructure and initiating and facilitating demonstration projects in the initial priority areas; II is the development phase, focusing on the core regional and national mechanisms for climate services; and III, the expansion and continuation phase, during which maintenance and sustainability of institutional mechanisms will be emphasized.

Building Capacity for LDCs to Participate Effectively in Intergovernmental Climate Change Processes: Achievements 2014-2017

This analytical document assesses the capacity building efforts dedicated to the Least Developed Countries. Decisions made at the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – such as those related to finance, adaptation, mitigation, technology, and capacity building – have major ramifications for LDCs. To ensure that the interests of LDCs are adequately and fairly reflected in the ongoing climate change negotiations, it is imperative that LDCs engage effectively in intergovernmental climate change negotiations, decision-making processes and eventual implementation of the decisions taken.
