This brochure aims to present the challenge of climate change and its impact in Maghreb in a simple manner. It also highlights activities that have been implemented to address it in the region. It is designed to support journalists in writing informed articles on climate change to raise public awareness of this problem.

This brochure highlights the importance of communicating climate change to the broad public and the crucial role that can be played by journalists and the media in doing so. It presents the key points addressed during the first international conference on broadcast media and climate change organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), on 4-5 September 2009. It also includes the Paris Declaration adopted by the conference participants.

This analytical report explores the relationship between the education sector and climate change through a review of academic articles and project documents. It introduces how education is both impacted by and has an impact on this phenomenon, and proposes various sector responses. Different theoretical frameworks for where and how climate change education fits into the education sector are made concrete with case studies from across the global. The document brings together theory, policy and practice.

This manual includes an education pack for peer educators, youth workers and teachers. It is designed to get groups of children and youth thinking about and taking action on climate change. The pack is divided into four sections: 1) Know more – three activities that will enable the group to find out more about climate change and its effects on the world’s children; 2) Explore more – two activities that encourage consideration of some “big” climate questions; 3) Do more – this section provides support and guidance to get the group thinking about what action can be taken to address climate change; 4) Share more – a simple form to complete to provide feedback about the activities implemented.

This curriculum includes lessons that are suitable for Canadian high school classes that address local and global citizenship, leadership, environmental and global issues. In particular, this resource fits well with Civics and Social Studies curricula for Grades 9 to 12. The language used in this guide reflects a classroom setting, but many activities are suitable for less formal settings. Through the lessons presented in the document students are expected, among others, to explore climate change, its consequences and possible solutions; work constructively in groups and debate controversial aspects of climate change; learn about individual, community-level, national and international opportunities to mitigate climate change; discover why children are vulnerable to the effects of climate change; and conduct research into climate change.

This manual is a guide on how facilitators, peer educators, project officers, teachers or youth workers can support young people in non-formal learning settings, both in and out of school, to take action in addressing the challenges of climate change. It aims to support the reader to focus the energy and ideas of children and young people into effective activism. This can take a range of forms, from practical projects such as tree planting or making solar cookers, to awareness-raising workshops or performances, community mapping and preparing for natural disasters. This resource can be used with any group: large or small, formal or informal, girls, boys or mixed-gender groups. However, it places special emphasis on the power and potential of girls and young women as catalysts for change in their communities.

This manual consists of a teacher’s and/or facilitator’s guide for in-school and extracurricular exploration and action activities in industrialized countries on the issue of climate change and its impact on child rights. The goal of this toolkit is to help children and young people understand the links between climate change and child rights and make them realize that they can fight climate change, empowering them to become actors of change. More precisely, the activities included aim to enable children to: explain the issue of climate change and its impact on children and child rights; explain how reducing carbon emissions in industrialized countries can reduce climate change and its negative effects, and that they can contribute personally to achieving this; and develop skills to undertake action.

This manual has been created to support secondary school educators in their efforts to work with youth to take action on climate change. Through the activities contained, students have the opportunity to discover how climate change is affecting children around the world, especially children in developing countries. The goal of this guide is to inspire both teachers and students to connect local issues to global concerns and inspire local action.

This analytical report draws attention to the impacts of climate change upon children. In particular, it seeks to illustrate how climate change may impact on every aspect of the most vulnerable children’s lives and how children themselves can be central to the response. The report starts with a description of the challenge of climate followed by an analysis of appropriate measures to protect children from its consequences.

This analytical report highlights that while public finance is already playing a significant role in the low carbon sectors, most of the money is targeted at the late-stage construction finance phase once most of the project development risk is removed. It notices that more can be done direct regarding financial flows to the early-stage project development phase using both investment and non-investment approaches. The report considers this Early Stage Financing Gap, examines the few public programmes currently addressing this issue in the renewable energy sector and proposes a significant scaling up (8+ times) of the capital allocated to this area. The amounts required are small in the context of existing and projected public financial flows to the low-carbon sector in developing economies, but the catalytic impact would be significant.

This analytical report addresses the current state of reindeer husbandry of northern Mongolia and presents recommendations from the Mongolian reindeer herders for improving the sustainability of reindeer herding and the management of pastures and their homeland. The taiga, the ecosystem in which the Dukha, Mongolia’s reindeer herder community, live, is a biodiversity hotspot and has abundant natural resources, but is also one of the regions of Mongolia which could suffer the greatest impacts of climate change over the coming decades. The report also notes that a number of resource extraction activities are undermining the livelihoods of the Dukha.

This manual provides guidance on how to conduct sound analysis for the development of national policies and activities that would – if adopted – accelerate the transfer and diffusion of selected mitigation and adaptation technologies in a particular country. The target audience of this guidebook is the Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) National Teams and their consultants. However, the guidebook may serve a wider audience who are engaged in addressing barriers to the transfer and diffusion of technologies. It complements the information provided in the Handbook for Conducting Technology Needs Assessment for Climate Change by focusing primarily on identifying barriers that hinder the transfer and diffusion of prioritised technologies and on developing measures to overcome these barriers.

This analytical report has been produced to support policymakers and stakeholders in the context of increasingly evident resource constraints and growing economic and environmental risk and uncertainty that threaten the continued stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region. It provides a closer look at resource use trends and at green growth strategies in response to the mounting challenges to sustainable development and in support of a transition towards green economies in the region.

This technical document evaluates how governments can use climate finance to lift barriers for the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices or the promotion of policies that alter the economic incentives for smallholder farmers. It states that, currently, the agricultural sector is at a disadvantage when competing for climate finance, compared with the industry and energy sectors. The document develops a number of proposals on how climate finance can support policies that seek to overcome investment barriers.

This technical document, which draws on literature and interviews, examines finance and risk-related obstacles hindering smallholders from participating in current carbon finance mechanisms. It also suggests a framework for identifying how to prioritize and aggregate smallholders to achieve mitigation at scale. The document includes recommendation for various stakeholder groups.

This analytical report presents the main insights from the BioCarbon Fund experience in accompanying the development and implementation of Afforestation / Reforestation Clean Development Mechanism (A/R CDM) projects covering the following aspects: (i) CDM regulations, (ii) land-related issues, (iii) non-permanence, (iv) land-related issues, (v) greenhouse gas accounting, (vi) finance, (vii) institutional arrangements, (viii) and under-delivery risk. The report concludes with a discussion of the reforms needed to scale up the A/R CDM in a significant manner and how this experience could inform the ongoing debate about other landbased carbon market mechanisms to mitigate climate change and support rural development.

This technical document summarizes knowledge and experiences in forest management as a response to climate change, based on a literature review and a survey of forest managers. This is part of an FAO-led process to prepare climate change guidelines for forest managers. It examines climate change impacts on forests and forest managers throughout the world. The document also reviews the main perceived challenges that climate change poses to forests and their managers. It summarizes experiences in preparing for and reacting to climate change in different types of forests. Finally, it indicates a number of gaps in enabling conditions (related to knowledge, institutional setting and culture) that hamper forest managers from responding effectively to climate change and its impacts.

This manual aims to promote gender-responsive and socially-sensitive climate change research and development in the agriculture and food security sectors through participatory approaches. It focuses on the household and community level. The guide is intended for agricultural development professionals who are using field-based research in their work with households and communities to respond to the impacts of climate change, prepare for future climate risks and impacts of climate change or modify agricultural practices to reduce contributions to climate change. It provides users with resources and tools for collecting, analysing and sharing gender-sensitive information about agricultural communities, households and individual household members.

This analytical report contains information on some of the many climate change initiatives – projects, campaigns, educational, tools, websites and publications – produced by the United Nations and young people. They ranged from global initiatives raising awareness for combating climate change to advocacy efforts at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations. This publication is intended to inform governments, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and young people on how youth participation has taken place at sessions of the UNFCCC starting with COP 5, highlighting increased efforts by young people to advocate for effective solutions to tackle climate change.
