This activity report collects the proceedings of a Cities and Climate Change Academy African workshop, held in Kampala, Uganda, from 3-5 May 2011. The meeting brought together African climate change experts teaching urban courses at the university level or conducting research in the field of climate change. Experts exchanged their experiences and good practices in teaching climate change in urban programmes, discussed pilot interventions of the Cities and Climate Change Initiative (CCCI) in Kampala. In depth discussions on modules on Climate Change and Housing, Climate Change and Poverty, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction and Urban Climate Change Vulnerability Assessments were held.

This activity report collects the proceedings of a university seminar workshop entitled “Strengthening Climate Change in Planning Education” held from 1-5 March 2010 at Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines. This seminar-workshop specifically sought to mainstream climate change into the existing syllabi and curricula of the University of Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning and to eventually provide continuing professional education/development for urban planners and practitioners at the local level, particularly among local government units and at the regional level, specifically in Asia and the Pacific.

This activity report collects the proceedings of a global workshop entitled “Strengthening Climate Change in Urban Education: Cities and Climate Change Academy” held in Bonn, Germany, on 1-2 June 2011. It drew 34 participants representing planning universities from around the world. The objectives of the workshop were: to exchange experiences on how to strengthen education on climate change and cities at university level; to reach a common understanding on how to develop generic course material for the Cities and Climate Change Academy; to agree on priority topics for the development of initial courses; to agree on partnerships (including universities from the North and South) for the development of selected courses; and to agree on a road map for 2011/2012.

This analytical report analyses disaster risk reduction in the context of education at country level. It reviews existing documents to develop an understanding of current national economic environments, legislation, awareness, capacity and institutional mechanisms related to disaster risk reduction and disaster management. It concludes with some proposals on potential areas of cooperation and collaboration, exploring potential synergies between stakeholders and building on results already achieved.

This analytical report covers the key activities relative to the Priority 3 of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015, «Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters», broadly: knowledge management; education; and risk awareness. It examines good practices to reduce disaster risk through education, knowledge and innovation (including efforts to protect schools from extreme natural events). It looks critically and strategically at current activities in order to identify gaps, opportunities in the form of synergisms and partnerships, and centres of innovation. It also touches on a great deal of other activity in education, public risk awareness, training and research.

This research brief is a digest of the ILO study “Skills and Occupational Needs in Renewable Energy”, which resulted from a joint EC-ILO project on Knowledge sharing in early identification of skill needs. The project covered over 30 countries worldwide – both developed and developing. The document analyzes why renewable energy is important, where new jobs opportunities in the sector can be found, skills gaps and actions to prevent labour shortages, and strategies to promote relevant skills development.

This technical document summarizes the views of Parties, relevant intergovernmental organizations and NGOs on possible elements of a successor work programme on Article 6 of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)  that deals with climate change education, training and public awareness. The document aims to inform discussions about a new framework for implementation of Article 6 of the UNFCCC and is meant to be considered by the 36th session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), 14–25 May 2012 Bonn, Germany. The new framework is expected to replace the amended New Delhi work programme that comes to an end in December 2012.

This techinical document includes the submissions from three parties containing information on activities undertaken to implement the framework for capacity-building in countries with economies in transition (EIT). The submissions are from: Denmark and the European Commission, on behalf of the EU; the Russian Federation; and Ukraine. Ukraine made two submissions, one on capacity building for countries with EIT under the Convention, the other on capacity building for countries with economies in transition under the Kyoto Protocol. The submissions are meant to be considered by the 36th session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI), which takes place in Bonn, Germany, from 14–25 May 2012.

This analytical report addressed skills and occupation needs in the green building sector. It notes that training offered in green building has increased notably over the past few years. However, employers still face difficulties finding qualified people to perform certain jobs because training is limited, too general, and not sufficiently practical. The hallmarks of an efficient training system for green building identified in the report are: including training as an integral component of the green building strategy, involving social partners in the design and delivery of training, combining practical and theoretical knowledge, and targeting initiatives towards migrant and informal workers as well as small construction businesses, which account for substantial shares of construction employment and business.

This analytical report addresses skills in the renewable energy sector as a whole. It brings together the finding from 33 countries and includes chapters on the drivers and barriers for the development of the renewable energy sector, sectoral trends, occupations, skills gaps and labour shortages, and identification and anticipation of skills needs.

This research brief is a digest of the ILO publication “Comparative Analysis of Methods of Identification of Skill Needs on the Labour Market in Transition to the Low Carbon Economy”, which resulted from a joint EC/ILO project Knowledge sharing in early identification of skill needs. The project covered over 30 countries worldwide – both developed and developing. The document discusses the importance of identifying and anticipating skills needs for the green economy.

This policy brief draws the attention of policy-makers and social partners in both developed and developing countries to the role of skills development in facilitating the transition to a greener economy and seizing the employment opportunities that the transition entails. In particular, it explains why skills development is important to greening the economy, what the key skills challenges are as economies go green, and how countries can respond to these challenges.

The technical document focuses on the design of research into skills for the transition to the low carbon economy. Its objective is to review models and other methods and approaches in identification of occupations and skills needs on the labour market which result from this transition. The document distinguishes between four main levels of skills analysis: macroeconomic; sectoral; occupations and skills; and training and education.

This analytical report contains information on some of the many climate change initiatives – projects, campaigns, educational tools, websites and publications – produced by the United Nations and young people, independently or in partnership. These range from global initiatives raising awareness for combating climate change, to advocacy efforts at the UNFCCC negotiations. The initiatives presented in this publication are categorized broadly according to the key elements of Article 6 of the UNFCCC, as follows: youth participation in climate change issues; education and training; and youth awareness and access to information.

This publication presents 25 experiences of 21 Latin American and Caribbean countries, 3 United Nations agencies and an international cooperation network that contribute to the implementation of the Amended New Delhi Work Programme. These experiences include different implementation level, methodologies and approaches that can be used by governments and other actors interested in the design and planning of education, training and awareness raising on climate change. The document is divided in three chapters: the first one contextualizes climate change and its impact in the region, the second one provides examples of education, training and public awareness initiatives and the third one summarized and concludes.

This technical document contributes to frame the challenge of dealing with extreme weather and climate events as an issue in decision-making under uncertainty, analyzing response in the context of risk management. It consists of nine chapters, covering risk management; observed and projected changes in extreme weather and climate events; exposure and vulnerability to as well as losses resulting from such events; adaptation options from the local to the international scale; the role of sustainable development in modulating risks; and insights from specific case studies.

This analytical report aims to show how broadband can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. It argues that to fulfill this potential a new policy framework is required. To illustrate this, the report showcases best government practices in mobilizing information and communication technologies (ICT) to reduce GHGs and build inclusive societies. This report proposes ten recommendations for policy makers with the aim to hasten and strengthen the ability of ICT and broadband to accelerate global progress towards the low-carbon economy.

This brief details the World Bank’s contribution to achieving synergies between development finance and climate change mitigation and adaptation. It explains that all of the 17 country assistance and partnership strategies prepared in Fiscal Year 2011 address climate change. It also showcases results achieved in projects related to: forestry, climate smart agriculture and water efficiency measures in urban municipalities. The brief further highlights efforts undertaken to strengthen operational links between climate change and disaster risk management, as well as partnerships with other UN programmes and organizations for climate action.

This manual consists of a media pack which aims to give journalists an overview of a key issue in global climate change negotiations. Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) is a mechanism to slow the loss of forests, but how it is going to work in practice is the subject of debate. This document briefly explains how the REDD mechanism might work and raises some of the key controversies to be resolved. It is accompanied by a short film, which looks at the possible effects of REDD on forest communities and contains interviews with different stakeholders including environmental journalists on reporting the subject, and by a video news release on REDD, which includes interviews with forest communities, campaigners, economists and politicians.

This cartoon booklet aims to raise the awareness of children on climate change. It presents one of the adventures of the fictional characters Ozzy Ozone and Zoe. In this episode, they explain the causes of climate change and highlight its devastating impacts in small islands and low lying costal states. Finally, they propose activities such as planting a tree or recycling that can be implemented by everyone to address global warming.
