1 November 2013, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The National Council for Climate Change and the Clean Development Mechanism (CNCCMD) and the National Institute of Education and Training of Teachers (INAFOCAM) invested on 1 November more than 400 teachers who completed the Programme of Education on Climate Change for Sustainable Development, designed by UNESCO, in the Jaragua Hotel.
The graduation ceremony was hosted by CNCCMD Executive Vice President, Mr. Omar Ramirez Tejada as well as the Director of INAFOCAM, Ms. Denia Burgos and the Country Focal Point of UNESCO, Ms. Julissa Ureña. Mr. Frank Ortiz, from the UNESCO Office in Havana, Cuba, also attended as a special guest.
Mr. Ramirez Tejada, addressing the graduates, said “as many of you are showing in the classrooms, it is undeniable that education has to play a crucial role. Being consistent with this, this initiative has focused on the professional development of teachers, in recognition of the transformative role that teachers and teacher educators must play in reorienting education to help achieve a sustainable future."
Mr. Ramirez Tejada also reported that this experience will be presented at the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change to be held in Warsaw, Poland, in mid-November. Two technicians and two facilitators who have been trained in this program will be member of the official Dominican Delegation to the event. He added that UNESCO has requested that the country be included in a global publication of case studies for tackling climate change through education.
Ms. Bernarda Firpo, Education Coordinator of Sur Futuro Foundation; Ms. Yoselin Trinidad, Facilitator of the Barahona Regional District and Mr. Virgilio Miniño, from the Risk Management Division of the Ministry of Education also took part in the graduation ceremony.
The Training Programme for Capacity Building of Teachers on Climate Change was implemented to promote greater capabilities on the subject of climate change and contribute to sustainable development of communities. This initiative is part of the project One UN Training Service Platform on Climate Change (UN CC: Learn).
Initially, this 50 hours training was directed to prepare a group of 50 trainers who were responsible for educating on climate change. 400 teachers of secondary and basic levels of the Dominican education system in the areas of natural and social sciences as well as curriculum technicians, risk management specialists, regional technicians and NGO facilitators with expertise in the subject were then trained.
