Side Event - Making Co-benefits Work for Communities
2 Jun 2011
Barcelona, Spain
This side event highlights that carbon projects can generate important co-benefits that go beyond emission reductions and that benefit communities directly or indirectly (e.g. village electrification, recovery of native species, increased employment, and preservation of biodiversity). It is however often difficult to quantify or even monetize these co-benefits. In this event, project developers, experts and the public and private sector buyers explore ways and options to make co-benefits count when developing a carbon project.
The workshop aims to share good practices and lessons learned from NAI parties experiences in conducting Technology Needs Assessments (TNAs), to identify specific needs and practical actions that could assist Parties in implementing the results of TNAs, and to discuss possible roles of TNAs in the context of the implementation of the Technology Mechanism established at the sixteenth session of the COP. In addition, the workshop provides an opportunity for countries' experts to exchange views with representatives from the private sector on possible ways to enhance access to funding for the implementation of the results of TNAs.
The Day focuses on the role of information and communications technologies for the environment. The event includes workshops, interactive discussions, publication releases and networking sessions on issues such as energy efficiency, climate monitoring and adaptation, e-waste and the green economy transition.
