As part of UNITAR's 2011 Negotiation Training Series, this workshop is designed to equip delegates, particularly those from developing countries, least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing States (SIDS), with the skills and knowledge they need to perform efficiently in environmental sustainability and climate change-related negotiations at the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD), negotiation processes under the UNFCCC, and other fora.

In this side event, experts from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Colorado State University (CSU), Michigan State University (MSU), and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) showcase tools for establishing the carbon benefits of sustainable land management interventions in terms of protected or enhanced carbon stocks and reduced greenhouse-gas emissions.

This workshops aims to strengthen the capacities of public officers and local actors to reduce disaster risks and climatic dangers in urban settlements in Latin America. In particular the workshop had three major objectives: 1) to share knowledge, technical tools and the region’s developed experiences by organizations that are linked within the topics issues; 2) to document the recommendations about how to move from “the lessons to the actions” on the risk management and climate change adaptation processes in urban contexts; 3) to contribute with elements bringing “from theory to practice” to join both topics issues risk management and climate change adaptation in urban contexts.

This workshop aims to put participants in contact with the state of the art research on emergent materials and fundamental processes relevant in the context of renewable energy production, storage, conversion, and usage. Rational materials design holds the promise to drastically increase the performance of both renewable energy conversion and energy storage. In this sense, new materials are a key element for a possible transition towards a more sustainable energy economy. Topics covered include: photovoltaics, artificial photosynthesis, fuel cells, electrocatalysis, batteries. The workshop consists of invited lectures as well as contributed oral presentations.

This webinar is centered on the presentation by Paula Silvia Villanueva, an independent consultant and Technical M&E advisor of the Strengthening Climate Resilience consortium at IDS, of her working paper “Learning to ADAPT: monitoring and evaluation approaches in climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction – challenges, gaps and ways forward."

The writeshop targets young scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and others from the South Pacific who are working in the field of climate change and disaster risk reduction. Through the writeshop, participants produce a peer-review quality publishable article and they gain enhanced awareness of the process of writing papers for academic journals.  These skills will allow their work to be incorporated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other high-level scientific bodies and consequently inform policy making on key issues of risk and climate. The writeshop involves one-on-one work with facilitators to provide supplemental training on academic writing and argumentation, in order to help new authors reach a standard of writing suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

This meeting aims to promote and stimulate socio-economic assessments and studies among the Regional Association (RA) Members. It provides a forum for discussing the outcomes of recent studies carried out by different Members and reviewing related methodologies. It is expected that the Conference will provide material for the development of regional guidelines on the subject with an outline of good practices, in order to build the capacity of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in the region for conducting socio-economic analyses and studies.

This course aims to provide participants with practical insights and up-to-date knowledge on the interconnected themes of climate, energy and food security, and to familiarise them with the extent of the challenges facing the Asia Pacific region as well as the global community and some of the possible solutions. It encourages students to critically discuss the science, politics and economics underpinning climate change, energy and food security, and to discuss aspects of mitigation and adaptation to climate change impacts. The range of topics covered includes climate science, climate justice, food justice, hunger, peak oil, biodiversity and climate change, sea level rise, biofuels, renewable energy, global climate change policies, and low carbon society.

The VI Latin American Carbon Forum is a regional event established to promote knowledge and information sharing while facilitating business opportunity environments among main carbon market stakeholders. It promotes discussion and exchange of experiences among interested stakeholders and provides participants the latest developments of mission trading schemes and the future of the CDM. Additionally, it focuses on analysing the international and national climate change mitigation policies and facilitates a comprehensive debate about the negotiation of greenhouse gases (GHG) emission reductions. Finally it seeks new impulses for increasing the volume of low carbon investments in Latin American.

This meeting addresses key topics such as food security, price volatility, climate change, knowledge sharing and green innovations. It provides a forum to learn and share knowledge, experience and innovations on emerging trends and related rural development issues. Over 160 presenters from all over the world share their creative and innovative experiences and knowledge. Participants have an opportunity to learn, share, connect and influence future directions.

This three-day international expert meeting focuses on the challenges that climate change poses to education systems in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). SIDS are among the most vulnerable countries with regard to climate change and are already confronted with its effects, including rising sea levels and changes in climate extremes such as droughts, floods, and tropical cyclones/hurricanes. The meeting will develop a road map guiding and promoting education as an important means to enhance adaptation to climate change, in the context of sustainable development. The road map and its recommendations will serve as a contribution to the upcoming 17^th Conference of Parties of the UNFCCC in December 2011 and the Rio+20 Conference in June 2012 as well as the End-of-Decade Conference of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in 2014.
